9 Bay Area Towns Where Retirees Can Eat Well Without Emptying Their Wallets

I came across a list recently ranking the best U.S. cities to retire to if dining out is your favorite pastime, and it got me thinking. My clients who are retiring or thinking about downsizing don't need to leave Contra Costa, Alameda, or Santa Clara County to find great food at a fair price. We already live in one of the best restaurant regions in the country, and you don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy it.

If you're weighing where to settle down for your next chapter, here's a look at nine communities I work in regularly, each with three affordable spots worth adding to your rotation.

Danville

Danville's downtown has plenty of upscale options, but there are still comfortable, wallet-friendly places to grab a bite.

  • Black Bear Diner — Classic American comfort food, generous portions of pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and hearty breakfast plates. Budget-friendly, easy on a fixed income.
  • Cocina Hermanas — Family-friendly Mexican fare with entrees typically under $20 and appetizers $15 and under.
  • Crumbs Breakfast, Lunch & Bar — A local favorite for weekday breakfast and lunch classics, casual and affordable.

Walnut Creek

Walnut Creek has a surprising number of budget-friendly gems tucked around downtown and Locust Street.

  • Tacos Walnut Creek — Authentic street tacos for $3 to $5 each, with burritos running $6 to $12.
  • Babalou's — Middle Eastern salads, wraps, gyros, and kabobs in the $5.50 to $10.95 range. The lamb shawarma wrap is a standout.
  • Kevin's Noodle House — Pho bowls for $7.50 to $10.75, a reliable and filling meal in a casual, high-energy setting.

Lafayette

Lafayette's downtown mixes upscale bistros with easygoing counter-service spots that are perfect for a casual lunch.

  • Morucci's Deli — A neighborhood deli known for hearty sandwiches at accessible prices.
  • Sideboard — A casual, counter-service café with a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu of updated comfort food. Great for coffee and a light meal without the formal price tag.
  • Lafayette Public House — A relaxed coffee shop that's become a go-to morning stop, with espresso drinks and simple, affordable bites.

Pleasant Hill

Pleasant Hill is home to some of the most consistently praised cheap eats in the area, tucked into its shopping centers.

  • Habana Express — Authentic Cuban food known for generous portions and very reasonable prices.
  • Tacos El Patron — Straightforward, affordable Mexican fare that's a local go-to for a quick, satisfying meal.
  • Tugboat Fish and Chips — Casual seafood at a fair price, a nice change of pace from the usual lunch spot.

Concord

Concord has a strong lineup of ethnic and casual eateries that deliver a lot of flavor for the price.

  • Saigon Bistro — Vietnamese classics like pho and banh mi in a casual, affordable setting.
  • Habana Express — Another East Bay location of this well-loved, budget-friendly Cuban spot.
  • Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ — Plate lunches with generous portions, a favorite for value-minded diners.

Pleasanton

Downtown Pleasanton has plenty of higher-end dining, but its shopping centers hide some excellent, affordable options.

  • Pocket Sushi — Custom sushi "pockets" averaging $12 to $15, fast and fresh.
  • CA Noodle — Savory, chewy hand-pulled noodles in a casual, wallet-friendly setting.
  • Teriyaki City Grill — Quick, satisfying teriyaki plates that are easy on the budget.

Livermore

Livermore's wine country reputation doesn't mean every meal has to be a splurge.

  • Sultan's Kebab — Mediterranean kebabs and wraps known for generous, affordable portions.
  • Maple Street Eatery — Casual American comfort food in a relaxed, easygoing setting.
  • Rosniyom Thai Street Food — Approachable Thai street food classics at a good value.

Fremont

Fremont's diverse food scene is one of the best-kept secrets in the East Bay for affordable dining.
